People all across the United States have been wondering why they are much more tired in the mornings.  On March 12th, everyone had to set their clocks forward one hour, which made everyone extra sleepy in the morning.

Daylight Savings Time is that time of year whenever people set their clocks forward one hour from standard time.  It normally occurs during the summer months.  After the summer months, in the fall, people then set their clocks an hour back.  The main purpose of DST is to make better use of natural daylight, but there are other benefits also.  For example, according to www.timeanddate.com, studies show that Daylight Saving Time leads to fewer road accidents and resulting injuries.  This is because the extra daylight is used to light up the roadways.  Also, it is used to reduce the amount of energy that is needed for the artificial lights in the evening time.

There are also bad effects of Daylight Savings Time.  These issues involve people’s health.  DST disrupts the body’s clock.  For example, if you normally wake up at 6:00a.m., during DST you are actually getting up for the day at 5:00a.m.  Daylight Savings Time also causes more heart attacks, road accidents, and sleep problems.  A study in Sweden in the year of 2008 found out that the risk of having a heart attack increases within the first three days of Daylight Savings Time.  Most traffic accidents that occur during DST happen on the Monday following the start of DST.  DST is also a depression trigger.  A Danish study found there to be an 11 percent increase in depression cases during this event.  It can also trigger Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is a type of depression that is related to the changes in seasons.  SAD normally starts in the fall and continue into the winter months.  Less than forty percent of all of the countries in the world actually observe Daylight Saving Time.

Although many people suffered during the first few weeks after Daylight Savings Time, the symptoms eventually subside.  Daylight Saving Time makes people sleepy, more depressed, and causes health problems.  In all, DST is very much needed for causing less automobile wrecks, lighting up roadways, and several other things.
